It’s only been open to the public for the last three years, has seen less visitors than those reaching Mount Everest’s summit, and boasts a cave big enough for a Boeing 747 to fly through.
It’s no wonder the largest cave in the world, Hang Son Doong cave, in the heart of the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in Vietnam, is one of the most hotly contested tourist tickets around.
That was confirmed this week when Oxalis Adventure Tours – the only company with access – put their 2017 tour tickets on sale, and sold out within 20 hours.
The cave was first discovered by local man Ho Khanh while out on a hunting mission in 1991, but it wasn’t until 2009 that scientists from the British Cave Research Association explored inside and it became known to nature lovers around the world.
With tickets selling out for Hang Son Doong or “Mountain River Cave”, eager travellers will have to wait until next year to get inside the cave. And getting tickets might be as hard as the steep descent into the caves.
For conservation reasons, only 600 tourists during January to August are allowed entry into the cave which is 5 kilometres long, and all applicants have to meet strict health requirements.
You’ll also need a healthy bank balance too, with a five day, four night tour costing $3930.
