End of free-travel incentive for Sydney commuters as Opal changes kick in

Opal card holders passing through Sydney's busiest interchanges such as Central Station and Bondi Junction will join thousands of other commuters in collecting $2 rebates from Monday when they switch modes of transport in a single journey.
However, commuters need to remember to swipe their Adult Opal cards to tap off even if they are travelling the full length of routes on buses and trains. Failure to do so means they will not receive the so-called "transfer discount" of $2.
As part of the biggest change to NSW's fare system in years, Monday also marks the end of the hugely popular incentive of Opal card holders gaining free travel after eight paid trips in a week.
Instead, commuters will pay half-price after forking out for eight journeys.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance told a budget estimates hearing last week he had ended the free travel for "very good reason" because "in order to deliver more services they have to be paid for".
Nadine, an Ashfield resident who did not want her surname used, said she was now likely to consider driving later in the week instead of using trains or buses to take her young sons for day trips
