Machu Picchu is an ancient city that is located in Peru and has preserved itself for years. It is worldwide known thanks to natural treasures it has.
The most interesting thing about Machu Picchu is that it was first built in 1450, then abandoned in 1500's. Then it was discovered again in 1911. Buildings made of limestone, virgin forests and its structure built on a high plateau make Machu Picchu the most visited city in Peru.
The ideal period to visit is June-August. If you're into trekking, I suggest you to go there in February though. For arrivals, you can take a train from Cuzco. It is so pleasing to go through steep slopes and canyons on my way to the city. Departing is usually the saddest moment of a trip, but none of my arrivals have been that good. First-class accommodation options are not so many. In fact, the only 4-star hotel here is Belmond Sanctuary Lodge.
My destinations in the city are; two historical Inca cities Patallaqta and Willkaraqay, the village Wayllapampa where around 400 habitants live, the terraces Intipata that Incas built to grow fruits and vegetables, the ancient town Phuyupatamarka, the pass with an altitude of 4215 m Warmi Wanusqa, Inca historical ruins Runkuraqay, a camping site Quchapata, Qunchamarka-Sayaqmarka where you can enjoy the views of Urubamba and Aobamba, the camping site Phuyupatamarka where Inca ruins are located, and Winay Wayna that is home to hostels and restaurants.
Machu Picchu is quite mystical and full of adrenaline. Wandering around by foot requires courage; however, I suggest you not to give up and keep exploring the city. It provides you with beautiful landscapes and mystery as you explore.
Accepted as one of the most important archeological sites, the city was lost in history for 500 years. All the roads and passes were once destroyed only to protect the city. That's probably why the landscape is so splendid here. Because the region is rainy, plants just grow completely untouched by human hands and cover the city.
The number of restaurants is not so high and you can find Peru cuisine in addition to marine products. "Ceviche" from fresh raw fish or marine products, grilled cow heart "anticucho", chicken with rice "arroz con pollo", duck with rice "aji de gallina", and "estofado" prepared with meat, potatoe, corn and carrot are the best local delicacies. Indiofeliz, La Roca Sagrada Pizza Restaurant, Palate Bistro Machupicchu, Tampu Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge, Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge, El Manu, Coca Qantas and Intawki are the most popular restaurants in Machu Picchu.
